Review of a home TENS Unit

TENS 7000 2nd Edition Digital TENS Unit with accessories

What exactly is a TENS unit?

I definitely had to go elsewhere to get an explanation for how a TENS unit works on calming pain –  I still call any TENS unit the zap-zap machine.  This is the best explanation I could find:

TENS, or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, is a means of treating chronic or acute pain through the use of carefully-controlled, low-voltage electrical impulses which stimulate the nerves and block pain messages to the brain. At the same time, these pulses encourage the body to produce more endorphins, or pleasure hormones, to reduce and relieve pain. Finally, they encourage improved blood flow, which encourages healing and better mobility. –  excerpt from Dr. Ho’s blog

Do TENS units work to relieve pain?

We give TENS two thumbs up. Shihan Mehrkar has used this unit on his knee since 2016 and always receives relief for the arthritis pain after intensive training.

As for me, I was introduced to TENS during physical therapy after rotator cuff repair surgery. TENS combined with ice packs provided the most relief after 30-minute PT treatments.

How much to spend on a home TENS unit

The prices vary tremendously and may not necessarily mean a better overall experience. I was prepared to spend over $100.00 for a good home TENS unit but I was happily surprised when the cost was well under that.

You can purchase the same TENS 7000 2nd Edition Digital TENS Unit for under $30.00! . This is the unit we use, and here is the link to purchase it on Amazon.
