This week’s Student Spotlight

Student Spotlight

The Bushido School of Karate is so appreciative of the students and families that are a part of our Bushido Karate family. We’ve had the pleasure of teaching for over 2 decades and in that time have been privileged to teach thousands of students. Everyone started at the beginning with no shortcuts, and we are so proud of their accomplishments.  Our weekly Student Spotlight will feature randomly chosen students that are on their own journey at The Bushido School of Karate.

This week’s spotlight is on Eric!

  • Eric is 12-1/2 years old, is in 7th grade and is a black belt at Bushido Karate
  • He started karate classes in April 2010
  • Quote from Eric:  “My favorite thing about training at Bushido Karate is the people. There is diversity at this school and everyone supports each other no matter what”
  • Eric’s mom says: “I chose Bushido Karate (for my son) because they treat you like family, and the discipline that the children get from being at this school. It is also a great sport that benefits the children.”

A strong woman vs a woman of strength

strong woman vs woman of strength

I received this in an email way back on August 11, 2002 and I look at it from time to time. Inspiring, thought-provoking, interesting, and I have never seen it since.  I don’t know who the author is ( and if you do, please comment back!) but I hope you get something out of “A Strong Woman Vs. A Woman of Strength”.

A strong woman works out everyday to keep her body in shape…but a woman of strength builds relationshipsto keep her soul in shape

A strong woman isn’t afraid of anything…but a woman of strength shows courage in the midst of her fear.

A strong woman won’t let anyone get the best of her…but a woman of strength gives the best of her to everyone.

A strong woman makes mistakes and avoids the same in the future…but a woman of strength realizes life’s mistakes can also be unexpected blessings and capitalizes on them.

A strong woman wears the look of confidence on her face…but a woman of strength wears grace.

A strong woman has faith that she is strong enough for the journey…but a woman of strength has faith that it is in the journey that she will become strong.

Pass it on

This was shared with me 16 years ago and I know I forwarded it around to a lot of GREAT women at the time. I hope you will do the same! Click the share button and pass it on. Thank you!

CHANGE YOUR MIND, CHANGE YOUR BODY

BUSHIDO KARATE

Martial Arts Fitness Series 1, Episode 2

Martial Arts Fitness episode 2

We continue our CHANGE YOUR MIND, CHANGE YOUR BODY® Martial Arts Fitness by BUSHIDO KARATE series with episode 2 – down block, groin kick and a combination to train your brain!

A down block can be used to block a “groin kick” or a “front kick” as it sweeps in front of your body. It can also produce some pretty amazing upper arms, especially if you add light weight. Using the groin kick – be careful not to lock your knee, but get full extension – will improve balance, stamina and focus as well as hitting those muscles in your upper legs.

According to an article by Melissa Roth in Fitness magazine :

Stronger legs may indeed be a secret to staying slim. “When you increase the strength and endurance of your legs, it generally makes it easier to exercise and move around, leading to greater physical activity throughout the day. You burn more calories overall,” McCarthy says. In fact, a University of Alabama at Birmingham study found that women who maintained weight loss one year after dieting had much greater leg strength than those who didn’t.

Proper nutrition for young athletes

Advice from a nutrition professional

Our first blog post, The Best Workout has these 4 Components , explained which workout is the best.  Equally important to your success is nutrition and your diet. Don’t be afraid of that 4-letter word; your diet is what you eat. We are lucky to know Marie Leonard MA, MS, RDN, CDN of Yonkers, N.Y. . She is a nutrition professional, and a member of the Bushido Karate family!

Marie explains in easy-to-understand terms about the calories and nutrients needed to improve performance and physically prepare for high-intensity activities, like Bushido Karate. Marie was kind enough to put together an insert for our student manual to guide parents, and adult students alike, about proper nutrition. She provides valuable links and suggestions for healthy snacks and meals that will make eating well tasty, too!. Here’s the link for Marie’s article:

Healthy food that kids enjoy

We searched the web for menu ideas that are both healthy and tasty, and that provide important nutrients while being easy to prepare. Who doesn’t love a smoothie? Especially with warmer weather coming – we hope – it’s time to get those blenders buzzing. Want a great deal in the supermarket? Frozen fruit! You don’t have to wait for the fresh stuff. Just be sure you don’t buy the ones with added sugar. The ingredients should be fruit. And that’s it! Make this healthy and easy Peanut Butter and Banana smoothie that kids, and grown-ups, will enjoy!
